About

Homeschool Chess Club started in Austin in 1995, so we’re officially in our 30th year of gathering and playing.

Prior to the pandemic, Chess Club met at the Hancock Recreation Center. Of course in the Spring of 2020, everything shut down, and upon reopening in the fall of 2021, Hancock was no longer an option. Seeking a new location, we landed at Pease Park and haven’t looked back.

Spending every Wednesday outside, under the trees and experiencing some extreme chess situations (heat, wind, cold, sudden storms, so many school field trips!!) kids and families continue making this a mid-week ritual.

We focus on the basics, ensuring that we set a strong foundation for understanding the flow of a match, including the use of clocks. Kids are paired by ability, not age, so depending on skill and the desired amount of challenge, they get to choose their level.
