Chess Club Schedule, 2025-2026
We meet every Wednesday at Pease Park (1100 Kingsbury, Austin, TX, 78705). Sign in begins at 11:45am, with the first round starting around 12:15pm. We play 3 rounds of chess, with the final one beginning around 1:15pm.

WORKSHOPS
This year we will have opportunities to learn more about the ins & outs of chess, taught by other kids and parents of chess club. Topics will include opening traps, opening lines, various used chess terms, just to make a few.

Intercontinental Ballistic Missile
Alexa, one of our dedicated chess participants, is offering to teach a workshop. Starting tomorrow, she will teach a lesson to all who are interested. “I want to teach people interested or new to chess, to encourage them to keep learning further.”
For the ICBM, it is a very ambitious gambit, involving giving up two pieces for the opponent’s queen, and it has a really cool name. All ages and skill levels welcome.

Four Knights Game: Halloween Gambit
This gambit involves sacrificing a knight, and incessantly checking the king to win the queen and a rook
October 8th, 11:15-11:45am
Albin Countergambit
This is a counter to the Queen's gambit, involving sacrificing a Bishop and underpromoting to a knight.
October 15th, 11:15-11:45am
Rosen Trap
This is a variation of the englund gambit (side note: englund is not spelled wrong). It involves sacrificing many pieces for the queen.
October 22nd, 11:15-11:45am
Two opening traps using Bird’s Opening: From’s gambit.
Both traps including sacrificing a queen, and then checkmating with a bishop.
October 29th, 11:15-11:45am
Blackburne Shilling Gambit
This trap involves sacrificing a rook, to force the opponent to either give up their queen or be checkmated
November 5th, 11:15-11:45am
Scandinavian Defense: Leonhardt Trap.
This gambit involves sacrificing a bishop to deliver a discovered attack, winning the queen.
November 12th, 11:15-11:45am
Scholar’s Mate Counter
The counter we’ve all been waiting for. This gambit is for when your opponent plays the annoying Wayward Queen attack, but you counter that by forcing your opponent to give up their queen or be checkmated
