			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Second Annual Austin Chess Club Championships took place this past<br />
weekend (Jan 6-8). Congrats to both Stephen Young and Michael Tunks,<br />
who both played in the U1500 section. Michael, one of our chess club<br />
dads, tied for 2nd place, bringing home a nice check for his efforts.<br />
Stephen, one of our chess club teens, finished just out of the money,<br />
but both players gained quite a few rating points.</p>
<p>The Austin Chess Club Championships is an adult tournament (with a<br />
number of kids participating) which attracted 139 players from all<br />
over Texas, and even New Mexico and Lousiana!</p>
<p>Congrats, guys!</p>

of 2011 was held at Mathews Elementary in Central Austin. Over 170<br />

Scholastic Chess Tournament. AAH earned quite a few trophies, but they all<br />
walked away winners!!!!!</p>
<p>Competing on the K-12 team were:<br />
Connor Britt, Shelby Britt, Ian Hall, Chad Quartaro, and Stephen Young. The<br />
team walked away with the 1st place trophy! In addition, Stephen and Connor<br />
tied for 1st place, both with 4.5 out of 5. Chad earned a medal for a<br />
positive score.</p>
<p>Competing on the K-3 team were:<br />
Ariadne Dodd and Rocco Trosclair. Ariadne brought home the 3rd place<br />
trophy, and Rocco was competing in his first chess tournament!</p>
<p>We are proud of you!!!!!!!!!</p>

<p>Come play chess in Wooldridge park! Five round, unrated G/20 tournament for all ages!<br />

<p>Hours: 12:00 noon to approx. 5:00 p.m.</p>
<p>Check-in starts at 11:20 a.m. All pre-registered players must arrive before 12 noon or they may be ineligible to play in the first round. Players whose registrations are received <strong>after Saturday, October 29th</strong> (or on-site) may receive a round 1 bye, and begin play in Round 2. Parking is free on the streets around the park.</p>
<h2>Up to Four sections, by Grade Level: K-3 K-6 K-8 Open</h2>
<p>The number of sections will depend on number of advance entries. Some sections may be merged or the format altered if there are too few pre-registered players in any section. This is an <strong>unrated</strong> tournament and NO USCF membership is required. Due to seating limitations, only the first 100 players may be registered and allowed to play in this event.</p>
<p><strong>Minimum of four rounds.</strong> If time, weather, and section entries permit, we will hold <strong>five</strong> rounds.<br />
Time Control in all sections: Game/20. This will be a Swiss-system tournament, so everyone plays all day — there is no “elimination.”</p>
<h2>Medals to Top Contenders!</h2>
<p>Medals and additional prizes will be presented to the top individuals in each section. The top three finishers in each section will receive a medal. More awards may be given out depending on the number of entries in a section.</p>
<h2>Missing a round:</h2>
<p>If you know in advance, before the tournament starts, that you must miss a round, <a href="http://www.austinchesstournaments.com/contact/us" target="_blank">contact us via email</a>asap to request a “bye”. This allows a player to skip a round with no penalty. One 1/2 pt. bye is available for any round that a player must miss, but only if notice is given with your registration. Any additional byes will be at 0-pts. Any player assigned a 1/2 point bye due to late or incomplete registration will not be eligible for additional 1/2 point requested byes. If you discover during the tournament that you must miss a round or leave early, please drop by the computer desk and let the registrar know! You will be assigned a 0 point bye, and you won&#8217;t be paired for that round.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>Basics:</h3>
<p>This will be a <strong>Swiss-system</strong> tournament, so everyone plays all day—there is no “elimination.” Players must know how to play the game of chess! We will follow <strong>USCF rules</strong> including: touch-move, mandatory clocks if available, and notation. All students will be encouraged to take notation.</p>

<h3>Eligiblity:</h3>
<p>Review carefully for section eligibility! Students who are enrolled in the 6th grade MUST play K-12 or Open if they attend a Middle School or are homeschooled. Exception: Sixth graders rated under 600 may request to play K-6.</p>
<p>The Open Section is open to all ages. All scholastic players entering the Open Section must have reached 1200 at some point in their rating history. Contact the registrar if you have questions about this restriction. Ineligible open section entries will be placed in appropriate section and $5 refunded.</p>
<p>This is a rated tournament. All sections require a current USCF membership. Your USCF membership must not expire before December 31, 2011. JTPs ok for new K-3 players in either K-3 section. USCF memberships can be renewed/purchased at check-out.</p>
<h3>Schedule:</h3>
<p><strong>8:15 &#8211; 8:45 a.m. On-site registration.</strong> Pay on-site fees, plus USCF dues if needed. Any on-site entry may receive a half-point bye for Rd 1.<br />
<strong>8:30 – 9:00 a.m. Problem desk open.</strong> Any remaining preregistration problems should be addressed at this time. No check-in is necessary for preregistrations. We will make every attempt to contact you in advance if we see a problem with your registration. Note: If there is a problem with your entry and you arrive after the problem desk is closed, you may not be paired for Round 1. Verify your entry ONLINE!<br />
<strong>9:00 a.m. Open section begins.</strong> Open has 4 rounds, Round 1 is G.45. Rounds 2-4 are G/60.<br />
<strong>9:00 a.m. Important announcements</strong> in the Skittles Room (Cafeteria) about the Scholastic tournament. All players and coaches should be present.<br />
<strong>9:20 a.m Pairings go up.</strong> Find your seats!<br />
<strong>9:30 a.m. First round begins.</strong> K-3, K-3U400, K-5/6, &amp; K-12 sections have 5 rounds, Game/30. All players, even those with problems or on-site registrations, should be present at the start of Round 1 in the playing hall for their section!</p>

<h3>Note:</h3>
<p>There will be some <strong>“down time”</strong> between rounds since many games will finish early. We will provide an area (outside the tournament room) for casual <strong>“skittles”</strong> chess and/or other indoor activities. Parents and/or coaches, please provide age-appropriate activities during the time between rounds. You are responsible for your players between games! The organizers cannot baby-sit. <strong>No child should be left unattended!!!</strong></p>
<h3>Awards:</h3>
<p>Trophies &amp; Medals to Top Contenders! <strong>Ribbons</strong> to all participants! Trophies to the <strong>top teams</strong> and the <strong>top individuals</strong> in each scholastic section. Number of trophies will depend on number of entries. Chess medals will go to all players (excluding Open section) that finish the tournament with a positive score (at least 3.0 out of 5.0) but do not trophy. No teams in Open section, but special trophies will be awarded to the highest scoring <strong>Parent &amp; Child</strong> teams.</p>

<p><strong>Online registration preferred.</strong> Click on the blue starburst to &#8220;Register Now&#8221;! Early entry pricing (scholastic &#8211; $18, open $25) in effect until Friday, 12/2/2011, 12 noon. Online registration closes at 12 noon on Friday.
