The Austin Area Homeschoolers Chess Club is pretty self-explanatory. It is a weekly chess club for homeschoolers in the Austin area. We meet almost every Wednesday at the Hancock Recreation Center from 11:45 – 2:00 to play chess and have fun!

Chess Club Notes

  • Signing in for Chess Club starts at 11:45. Pairings are done at 12:00. Please be on time. Latecomers may not be paired for the first round.
  • The entry fee is $1 per chessplayer per week. This covers facility costs. Check in and pay at the rec center desk. Don’t forget to also check in at the chess club computer! To cover club costs, membership dues are $15 per player per year.
  • Chess club has a library! If you want to improve your game, visit the library before the last round!
  • Food is allowed outside on the picnic tables ONLY. This is part of our agreement with the Recreation Center for use of their facility.
  • Please review the Expectations about rules at the Hancock Recreation Center.

Rules for Chess at Chess Club

The following are official rules of the United States Chess Federation.

  • Touch Move: If you touch a piece you have to move it!
  • If you touch an opponent’s piece you must capture it, if it is a legal move.
  • If you take your hand off a piece you have just moved It must stay!
  • If you need to adjust an opponent’s piece (or your own) say “Adjust” while adjusting the piece.
  • We play QUIET CHESS, i.e. no talking during the games.
  • Please be a good sport! Sportsmanship is very important in chess!
